far review cry 5

Far Cry 5 tells the story of the Seed family, leaders of a religious cult called Eden's Gate based out of Hope County, Motana. After an arrest attempt gone wrong, you attempt to repel the cult from taking over Hope County. Before taking down their leader, Joseph Seed, you'll have to overthrow his three siblings. Jacob Seed rests in the north, controlling the military side of things. John Seed houses in the South, and handles recruiting new members of the cult. Finally, Faith Seed sits in the east, producing copious amounts of a drug known as “Bliss”.

You'll build up a resistance against the Seed family in the three individual sectors of the map. Completing missions, liberating strongholds, and playing side activities all give you resistance points. These points fill up a bar, and once that bar is filled, you'll have a final confrontation with a Seed family member. Toppling their hierarchy and gaining ground is of upmost importance, so you'll spend a lot of time doing favors for the citizens of Hope County. The characters you meet along your travels can often be recruited, fighting by your side.

While the main story is a bit too serious and often too dark, I found that most of the side missions tell lighter and more goofy stories. Whether it's completing a race in an ATV or trying to catch a mythical fish, the stories contained in the smaller missions are often entertaining and engaging. There are tons of collectibles and locations to discover, spanning the vast rural land of Montana. While the setting might not be as exotic as some of the past locales in Far Cry history, it's definitely one of the best looking.

Besides the campaign mode (which can be played both solo and cooperatively), there's a content-heavy standalone mode called “Far Cry Arcade”. Far Cry Arcade allows you to use a map editor to create your own bite-sized Far Cry experiences. There are also some competitive offerings stemming from the map editor as well. Creative players can make maps and game modes for players to vote on, giving the competitive multiplayer a looser and more casual feel. Above all else, fun seems to be the main focus. Some modes might be unbalanced, but you'll hardly notice it if the map is well made. Far Cry Arcade also offers endless amounts of content, with new missions and maps being made each day. I have no doubt that as the community grows and players begin to understand the map editor more, we'll have some truly outstanding missions and multiplayer maps.

Overally, Far Cry 5 might not make any huge leaps in the formula, but it adjusts some of its core gameplay to be more welcoming to newcomers. Far Cry 5 takes some much-needed steps to reinvigorate the franchise. It might not be the breakout hit of the year, but Far Cry 5 is fully satisfying, content rich, and well worth the price of admission.
